AR App

Gamify location based service with Augmented Reality

How might we show the engagement level of a beacon based location service?

Showcase how a location service works through a game for the audience of the sales conference. This game was created to show the value of a location service offering. The product team gave out prizes for the sales reps that participated.

Role

  • UX Design

  •  UI Design

  • Game Design

  • Visual design

Goal

  • Beacon Technology

  • Push Notifications

  • Be Fun

I created the game experience, UI, visual design elements, and screen layouts for the developers to implement from. I worked directly with the product owner and developer for the product.

Planning Phase

Theme

The National Sales Conference showcases products and service offerings from all lines of business. The product owner of this location service offering wanted a way to demo the functionality of the location service in a fun and intuitive manner.

The sales manager (who was in-charge of the booth at the conference) chose the Matrix for the theme of the game. It fits within the larger theme of the conference.

Game Design

The product owner said he wanted it to be like Pokemon Go, where things would appear in augmented reality. We knew we would be using beacons to trigger certain partner booths in the conference. I took these two reference points and designed the basic rules for the game. I white-boarded the concept and UI with the product owner and another designer to make sure it fit stylistically and made sense.

Concept

The player is in the Matrix trying to find power ups to help defeat the agent. The agent shows up randomly. When he shows up you will fight him. The more power ups you have, the higher chance he will be defeated - the fight is decided by a random roll by the system. If you lose the fight the agent takes a power up from you. Once you have all the power up items you automatically win against the agent and are entered to win a prize.

Power Ups

The first step was to watch "The Matrix". From there I took key moments and items to use for the game and interface. I chose nine events/items from the movie to use as power ups.

While the expectation was for these items to appear on the screen, I really wanted them to look like real game assets. I made the 6 states for them to rotate, like a coin or ring, and provided the developer animated gifs for each power up. This made impressed everyone on the team and brought up the quality of the app.

The finishing touch was to skin the interface. While watching "The Matrix", the interfaces and technology looked rather dated. I updated the look by referencing newer icons from the Ironman suit's interface.

Development Process

Challenges

This was a short project that consisted of two sprints. I gave the developer the game design to start with and delivered assets as they were completed

Closing

The app was very successful and brought in many leads for the sales team. One customer requested our services to have an AR easter egg hunt themed game for their location.
